Hannaford Grant

For the second year in a row, the Marcia Buker community has earned an additional $1,000 from the 2011 Hannaford Helps Schools Program based in Topsham. Every store grants these funds to the school that earns the most money through the program.

Hannaford shoppers who purchase designated products donate those “school dollars” to the school of their choice. These dollars are either collected in the towers in the store or turned into the school. A big thank you to the many parents and staff who dedicated their “school dollars” for Marcia Buker. Mrs. Coughlin’s combined first/second grade collected the most Hannaford dollars during this fall’s program.

With last year’s $1,000, Marcia Buker teachers each received a gift card to purchase classroom resources and materials; we’ll vote again this year to decide how to allocate the funds in support of student learning.

What a great example of community support for our school!

Family Reading Night!

Save Thursday, April 5th, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. for a fun-filled Family Reading Night at Marcia Buker School when we will be celebrating books and reading. Our many “reading rooms” will offer a variety of genres that will appeal to all interests, including the classics, action-filled stories with humorous characters, stories and music, interactive reading, and much more.

Book-loving Baxter, the friend Maine Coon Cat from the Maine State Library, will be with us to greet one and all. We will have door prizes, a new book for every child, gently used books for adults, and refreshments. New for this year, students will be able to make their own bookmarks with stickers, ribbons, and other decorations at the Bookmark Table in the multipurpose room.

Because our librarian Mrs Goodall is retiring this June, this Family Reading Night will be the last one managed by here. A big Marcia Buker thanks to Mrs. Goodall for her dedication to books and reading.

Come April 5th to enjoy reading adventures presented by our own staff and teachers. You might even get to see the Lorax!

Read Across America Day

In honor of Read Across America Day (a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday),  a number of local people came to Marcia Buker School to read to children in the Library Media Center, among them State Senator Seth Goodall. Senator Goodall read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to Mrs. Garriepy’s fourth grade class and Mrs. Bernier’s second grade class (Mrs. Bernier was the senator’s first grade teacher).
